Abstract
Most of the methods known to have been developed to recycle the red mud formed in alumina production are not currently in use. The main reason is that the product is not transportable, since it has a moisture content of at least 35–50% even after its “dry” storage. Experience in the dewatering and use of red mud has been accumulated from 47 tests performed at 35 different factories. The use of filter presses is optimum for the dewatering operation. Construction has nearly been completed on a commercial shipping facility that will have a capacity of 500,000–700,000 tons of red mud a year. Startup of the facility will make it possible to conduct tests of the recycled product at customers’ factories and introduce proven technologies for recycling red mud from any alumina plant.
