Experience in developing suburban areas in the largest cities of the USA, Great Britain and Germany

This article is devoted to the study of international experience in the development of suburban areas of the largest cities, using the example of countries such as the United States of America, Great Britain and Germany. The article considers various examples of project implementation, approaches and strategies for achieving a comfortable environment and sustainable development. Both successful and not very successful projects for the formation of suburban areas of large cities and megalopolises, which in terms of population correspond to the largest (definition from state building codes) Ukrainian cities, are studied. An analysis of the classification of cities by population between Ukraine, the United States, Britain and Germany is carried out. This study is based on the experience of scientists accumulated over the centuries, modern figures in urban planning, sociology and economists and others are analyzed, and the current situation of suburbs in the zone of influence of large cities and megalopolises is considered. Also, in the study, with the help of theoretical knowledge and practical examples, urban planning terminology is thoroughly disclosed: suburbanization, exurbanization, agglomeration and conurbation; Modern trends are traced: urban sprawl, "new urbanism", monofunctional or mixed use of territories, the boundary of urban growth, patchwork urbanism or patchwork urbanism, the creation of green belts. This article highlights many opportunities for the development of a high-quality environment in suburban areas. The problems that communities began to face after adopting a number of approaches and innovations are also given. Although this study analyzes only three foreign countries, as a result, we received a lot of useful information for the formation and improvement of suburbs of Ukraine. In the future, it is worth analyzing the countries of the Near and Far East, other Western countries and using this knowledge in further scientific works. The study of this topic should help the post-war restoration of the territories of suburban areas of the largest cities of Ukraine, succeed in achieving the goals of sustainable development and serve to improve the quality of life of the population.
