Abstract
The open systems model of support groups (Schopler & Galinsky, 1993) provides the organizing concepts for the articles in this volume. Support groups are conceived as the center of a continuum of supportive group interventions, overlapping with self-help groups at one end and treatment groups at the other. The open systems model of support groups is a framework for understanding the factors that affect support groups, for guiding interventions, and for evaluating their outcomes. The major conceptual dimensions addressed by the model are environmental conditions, participant characteristics, group conditions, and outcomes. An overview of major concepts is followed by a discussion of the contribution of each of the articles to an expanded view of support groups.
