Abstract
For general systems of conservation laws, in any space dimension, we prove the existence of weak shocks corresponding to a simple real genuinely nonlinear eigenvalue of the system and for a time of existence T independent of the strength of the shock. For instance, the results apply to Euler's equations of gas dynamics.
