Abstract

Pulsed streamer discharge plasmas, one of the non-thermal plasma have been used to treat exhaust gases. Since a pulse width of applied voltage has a strong influence on the energy efficiency of the removal of pollutants, the development of a short pulse generator is of paramount importance for practical applications. In this work, nano seconds (ns) pulse generator which has pulse width of 5 ns in output pulsed voltage is developed and NO removal experiments were conducted. The experimental results of the NO removal using the ns pulsed streamer discharge showed 100% of NO removal ratio (initial NO concentration = 200 ppm) and the extremely high energy efficiency for NO removal. The result of deriving energy efficiency for NO removal indicated that the ns pulsed discharge has great advantage in energy efficiency for NO removal to sub-¿s pulsed discharge and other discharge methods. The highest NO removal energy efficiency of 2.3 mol/kWh (= 69 g/kWh) was demonstrated at 70% of NO removal ratio. By this research, the utility of the ns pulse plasma process was proven and the influence of shorter pulse duration on NO removal energy efficiency was confirmed.
