Abstract

Exegesis and biblical history in Eusebius of Caesarea’s Ecclesiastical History (Book I) To speak about the beginnings of Christianity, Eusebius of Caesarea selects the most striking episodes in the life of Jesus-Christ and tells them with numerous references to the Old and New Testament. The aim of this article is to study the relationship between narration and exegesis. For this we shall analyse the way he refers to the Bible in the First Book of the Ecclesiastical History (more or less literal quotations, paraphrases or/and synopses); we shall also study the theological themes which make his narration both a holy story and an apologetical weapon.
