Abstract

This study examined exercise trends among retired weightlifters in order to make appropriate recommendations that may enable them to exercise more effectively to maintain fitness. Retired weightlifters were surveyed to determine exercise preference, recreation choices, any specific weight training exercises, and weight equipment used. A total of 100 responded (76% return rate). The weightlifters were also surveyed on their feelings about retirement. The survey revealed that retired weightlifters initially become involved in many physical activities but their involvement decreases as years go by. Of the respondents, 40% considered 60 to 69 min of exercise per week as sufficient for enhancing fitness. The most popular activities were general weight training, jogging, gardening, swimming, squash, and walking. The longer their retirement, the greater their participation in recreational activities. Long-term adherence to physical exercise was influenced by age at retirement. In all, 70% of the respondents thought counseling on retirement from sport would help weightlifters cope better with retirement.
