Abstract

Detailed exciton structure in luminescence excitation curves is presented corresponding to n = 1 of the yellow series and n = 2, 3 of the green series. An analysis of the overall shape of the excitation curves for various sample thicknesses based on known optical excitation mechanisms allows a computation of a quantity proportional to the capture cross section for n = 1 excitons by the luminescent centers. In this way the presence of excitations to the n = 1 exciton of the green series was observed and a value of the k = 0 energy for this exciton obtained. On combining the results for the overall curve shape with a new size effect in Cu 2O for the n = 2 exciton structure (yellow series) a value for the fraction of n = 2 excitons which decay to n = 1 is calculated.
