Abstract

Exciton characteristics of GaTe single crystals grown by vapour-phase transport have been studied by optical measurements. Up to n=4, hydrogen-like exciton series are clearly observed in the absorption spectra. In the n=1 exciton energy region three types of excitons exist. From the group theoretical consideration and studies of micro-photoluminescence and micro-Raman scattering spectra, we have concluded that a suitable scheme for the excitons in GaTe is not LS coupling but j–j coupling.
