Abstract
The first excited states are due to electron transfer, and exceptional effects of strong spin-orbit coupling and coinciding φ and δ one-electron energies in the 5f shell determine a characteristic distribution of 56 states, if one of the four π u electrons are transferred. It has no physical significance to ask whether these states are triplet or singlet. Recent Xα results are critically analyzed. Their unique photochemistry may contribute to the use of solar energy.
