Abstract

2013 marks the fiftieth anniversary of Hodgkin and Huxley's award of the Nobel prize for their studies on action potentials in neurons. This research opened a new field of applied mathematics, the study of excitable systems and excitable media. Recent years have seen several reports suggesting that the migration of certain cells is governed by excitable systems. In this paper, I review certain aspects of the mathematics of excitable systems focusing on their possible role in describing cell motility.
