Abstract

Many of the exchange correspondence files at the Milton S. Eisenhower Library of The Johns Hopkins University (JHU) begin with letters setting up exchange agreements, and some date back to the 1880s. This paper presents observations made during an examination of the JHU exchange files. It describes correspondence formats, cites recurring library problems, summarizes efforts to maintain exchanges during wartime, and lists trends discovered. Examination of other archival exchange records would be useful in order to determine how many of these observations are universal.
