Abstract

Half of the 6.4 million yearly pregnancies in the US are unintended. Consistent use of effective contraception can prevent unintended pregnancy. Short-acting hormonal contraception (oral contraceptive pills, the ring, the patch and injectable contraception) are the most commonly used methods, and require counseling regarding their benefits, side effect profile and contraindications. The quantity and quality of current contraceptive counseling, especially for these commonly used methods, is poorly understood. Objectives include describing the content of contraceptive counseling and patient knowledge after contraceptive counseling, and identifying areas for improvement in contraceptive counseling.
