Abstract

This paper discusses the accuracy of insertion loss measurements on low loss fiber optic patch cords and components. A comprehensive analysis of the measurement process is necessary to know the factors dominating the measurement accuracy. An analysis of a typical measurement system proved an overall insertion loss measurement accuracy ranging from /spl plusmn/0.18 to /spl plusmn/0.28 dB, based on the measurement system configuration and the calibration procedure. Two factors share in bringing about the overall accuracy are the instrument measurement accuracy of about /spl plusmn/0.065 dB, and the calibration accuracy which ranges from /spl plusmn/0.15 dB to /spl plusmn/0.26. It shows while power measurement factors contribute to the overall measurement accuracy, calibration uncertainty due to connector loss dominates the overall measurement accuracy.
