Abstract
The Al and Si incorporated Al2O3-C material has been prepared using alumina, Al and Si powder, graphite and nano-SiO2 powder as starting materials and resin as binder. Effects of nano-SiO2 powder addition on physical properties, high temperature strength properties and oxidation resistance of this material have been studied. The results show: 1) physical properties are improved with addition of appropriate nano-SiO2 powder; 2) high temperature strength properties are increased with addition of nano-SiO2 powder. This may be attributed to nano-SiO2 powder promote Al, Si to react with C, CO and N2 in-situ formation fibrous AlN and SiC non-oxides, and the non-oxide fibres constitute network structure creating strengthening and toughening effects; 3) oxidation resistance is improved with addition of nano-SiO2 powder. This may be due to SiO2 protective layer containing mullite forming easily with nano-SiO2 powder addition which would retard O2 diffusion into specimen.
