Abstract
The concept of an intelligent network, which has been discussed for more than a decade, has promised to solve a number of problems of present telecommunications networks. It also aims to provide a common framework for future networks and services. In this paper, it is argued that current IN architectures and models have inherited a number of assumptions of traditional telephony networks, which limits their ability to solve the problems of today, and makes them unable to support new, advanced services like multimedia conferences.
