Abstract

The time evolution of the thermocline in the Archipelago of La Maddalena in the Summer 1976, when a quick atmospheric front of western origin passed through the archipelago, is discussed. Large-amplitude internal waves are observed. We present and discuss the idea that they are generated through a mechanism of baroclinic compensation of the wind stress, strongly enhanced by the morphology of the archipelago.
