Abstract

1. 1. Stimulation of the anal nerve produces an inhibitory post-synaptic potential (IPSP) in a specific neuron in Helix. The IPSP is blocked by ergometrine. 2. 2. Dopamine hyperpolarizes the cell and blocks spontaneous action potentials. The action of dopamine is inhibited by ergometrine. 3. 3. Pre-treatment of snails with compounds that lower brain dopamine (α-methyl-3,4-dihydroxyphenylalanine [α-methylDOPA], α-methyl- p-tyrosine, reserpine, or 6-hydroxydopamine) reduced the initial and final heights of the IPSP. 4. 4. Pre-treatment with the dopamine precursor 3,4-dihydroxyphenylalanine (DOPA) increased the initial and final heights of the IPSP. 5. 5. It is suggested that this IPSP is due to the release of dopamine at the synapse.
