Abstract
Introduction Despite the high prevalence of traumatic facial injuries in contact sports such as boxing, rugby and hockey, there is currently no comprehensive resource to guide healthcare professionals in advice to athletes returning to sports. In particular, there is debate as to whether osteosynthesis plates for internal fixation need to be removed prior to return to professional competition. Plate removal is not without morbidity including further potential tissue damage, anaesthetic risk and further recovery time.
