Abstract

Insecurity, caused by poverty and circumstances such as sickness and unemployment, is one of the important social issues that all communities need to address. The most significant set of policy measures available to societies in this regard is social security, which is defined here as programmes initiated by either government or private organisations to assist the poor and other people in need to achieve or maintain a certain minimum standard of living. This article highlights some of the most important events, views and ideologies that have shaped social security in South Africa over the past few centuries.
