Abstract

A spray evaporation experiment was conducted using commercial nozzles distributing liquid ammonia on a horizontal, plain stainless steel tube with a 3/4-in. diameter. The average local spray flow rate was measured, and varied from 0.0138 to 0.0777 kg/(s.m). The saturation temperature was tested from {minus}23.3 C to 10 C, and the heat flux was tested from 8 to 60 kW/m{sup 2}. The effects of heat flux, saturation temperature, spray flow rate, and nozzle height were investigated. Both standard-angle and wide-angle commercial nozzles were tested. The results are compared with pool boiling data obtained in the present experiment and previously published pool boiling and spray evaporation results.
