Abstract

Transient energy flow method is a new method of power system oscillation analysis, and can be used to locate the oscillation source and evaluate the damping of elements. In this paper, the sub-synchronous oscillation in a system with a steam unit, a VSC-HVDC transmission system and a series capacitor compensation is studied. The transient energy flow method is used to evaluate the damping characteristics of the VSC-HVDC. The results are compared with the damping coefficients of the shaft masses, and the effectiveness of the transient energy flow method is verified. The damping characteristics of VSC-HVDC with different power reference values and controller parameters are studied. The results show that VSC-HVDC is a positive damping element, which can effectively restrain sub-synchronous oscillation.
