Abstract

We report a method to evaluate the catching efficiency of small pots for prawns, based on the model experiments done in a tank in which 6 model pots and 5 population densities were used. Both the entry and escape behaviour of the prawns were affected by the height of the neck above the base under the conditions used here. The pattern of results obtained in the laboratory was similar to the pattern obtained in the field tests. The catching efficiency of a small pot with a relatively high neck would become very low. The value of the mean moving ratio could be used as an index of the relative catching efficiency of a small pot as a first approximation.
