Abstract

The peculiarity of the metabolism of the biogenic amine-serotonin to 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid (5-OIUK) in the epiphyses of persons who died from suicidal acts and the role of serotonergic mediation in the formation of suicidal behavior is discussed. Biochemical studies of serotonin and its metabolite content-5-OIMC were carried out on epiphyses (n = 70) of cadaveric material of persons who died from suicidal acts and somatic diseases of different etiology. Revealed changes in metabolism may indicate a decrease in the formation of serotonin from tryptophan, which may be due to a decrease in the activity of enzymes participating in this process, about increased consumption of serotonin; as well as on the enhancement of monoamine oxidase activity, which is involved in the degradation of serotonin. The role of the serotonergic system in the mechanism of controlling aggression and the formation of depressive states is shown.
