Abstract

The development of acoustic emission and stress-wave-factor methods for the evaluation of composite materials and structures is discussed. Reference to existing work and on-going programs shows the direction for the use of both methods. Acoustic emission measurements rely on the self-originating signals created during deformation whilst the stress-wave-factor method utilizes an externally stimulated impulse and properties within the material which perturb the signal.
