Abstract

An automated “system” of leukocyte differential counting consisting of an electronic screening instrument, Hematrak, and an operator technologist was evaluated to determine its ability to identify normal cells. The system’s identification of normal cells on 454 blood smear slides compared favorably with that of the standard manual method, although there appeared to be a statistical difference of approximately 2% between the instrument and laboratory identification of lymphocytes and monocytes; this would not be considered clinically significant. The instrument alone identified 96.5% of 38,300 cells examined on 383 of these slides, while the operator then identified 3.5%, some of which were abnormal cells.
