Abstract
This chapter describes the evaluation of an auditory rehabilitation scheme. It presents a study on a population based on a specific geographical area, rather than on a particular age group or diagnostic category. An important consideration was that the area should be sufficiently close for the patients to be able to return for a number of visits. The Royal National Throat, Nose and Ear Hospital is situated close to the boundary between the London Boroughs of Camden and Islington. For a number of reasons, it was decided to concentrate the study on Islington. It was decided that the rehabilitation scheme to be adopted should be as comprehensive as possible. The aim should be to help the patients to function optimally, given their reduced hearing function, and to minimize the handicap deriving from their hearing loss. To achieve these ends, it was essential to establish links with other supportative agencies within the community.
