Abstract

In this work we revisit the problem of the restricted count rate capability of thermal neutron detectors utilizing the ZnS scintillator . The effect of the long afterglow of the scintillator on the detector performance at high counting rates is studied. A count rate capability substantially above values currently regarded as feasible is demonstrated. • Afterglow of ZnS: 6 LiF so far regarded as limiting the count rate capability. • Concept of individual sensitive elements and signal processing introduced. • This concept overcomes the assumed limitation on count rate capability. • Count rates up to 80 kHz per readout channel reached at event losses below 10% • Count rate capability depends not only on dead time but also on trigger efficiency.
