Abstract

Introduction: The maxillary sinus has an intimate relationship with the root apexes from the permanent teeth, which may hinder some orthodontic therapies. The objective of this study was to evaluate if the vertical growth pattern interferes with the distance between root apexes and maxillary sinus floor, as well as between root apex of canine and anterior wall of the maxillary sinus and floor of the nasal cavity (Y line of Ennis). Methods: A retrospective analysis was performed by means of Cone-Beam CT scans of 60 individuals (18-36 years) accomplished between 2011 and 2017. Measurements were made from ImplantViewer 3 software, initially determining the evaluation groups (hypodivergent, normodivergent and hyperdivergent) through the Frankfurt-Mandibular Plane Angle (FMA), subsequently subjecting them to the analyzes mentioned above in the objective. Results: There was no significant difference (p > 0.05) between the groups evaluated regarding the distance from root apexes to floor and anterior wall of maxillary sinus. Regarding the root apex of canine and the floor of the nasal cavity, hypodivergents presented smallest distance (p < 0.05). Conclusion: The relation of the root apex with the extremities of the maxillary sinus is independent of the vertical growth pattern, however hypodivergent patients had greater intimacy between root apex of canine and floor of the nasal cavity. Therefore, greater attention is required in the planning of orthodontic mechanics in this group of patients when the distal movement of the canine becomes necessary.
