Abstract
The current work undertaken focuses on the fabrication and evaluation of mechanical properties of unidirectional E-glass fiber laminate, hybridized by incorporating steel strip. The matrix material used was Epoxy. Hand layup technique is used for the manufacture of sandwich laminate. The unidirectional E-Glass fiber volume fraction considered during layup was 50%, 55% & 60%, while Steel strip volumetric proportion has been 5% and 10%, maintaining Epoxy at 40% by volume consistent throughout. The effect of embedment of steel strip with unidirectional-E-Glass fiber on the basic mechanical performance of the cooked recipe has been evaluated wherein, tensile and flexural behaviour has been investigated experimentally as per ASTM standards. The numerical analysis of the specimens has also been carried out by using ANSYS version −16. The results of experimental and numerical analysis has shown reasonably good agreement. Specimen S6 with 50% volume fraction of unidirectional E- glass fiber, 10% steel and mid plane placement of steel strip has shown superior properties as compared to other combinations.
