Abstract
Psychosocial care has been identified as an area of high priority in the UK. At a local level, staff cited a lack of knowledge and understanding of the key features of psychosocial care, resulting in low confidence in delivering effective psychosocial care. The aim of this evaluation was to review the impact of education on the knowledge and confidence of hospice staff in delivering effective psychosocial care. Qualitative and quantitative data was collected in order to facilitate consideration of the impact of education. Nine participants from the multiprofessional team completed the training programme. Findings demonstrated an increase in confidence scores for all participants linked with an increased understanding of psychosocial care. Audio-taping and observation of an interaction were found to be valuable when applying theory, and participants reported a change in their practice. The results suggest that attendance on the 3-day programme has increased the health professionals' understanding of psychosocial care and their confidence in providing psychosocial care in the clinical setting.
