Abstract
Subsurface wastewater infiltration systems (SWISs) have great potential in treating various wastewaters. However, information on the effect of the intermittent aeration and biochar addition on nitrogen removal in SWISs with loess soil is still scarce. This study evaluated the enhanced treatment performance in response to the intermittent aeration and biochar addition in SWISs with loess soil for treating decentralized domestic wastewaters. Higher COD removal (above 91%) was obtained in non-aerated and intermittent-aerated SWISs compared with other SWISs with biochar addition (below 82%). While higher TN removal (85–92%) was found in SWISs with biochar addition. In addition, better removal performances of NH4+-N (above 96%) and TP (above 98%) were achieved simultaneously in all SWISs. The results indicated that biochar played an important role in improving nitrogen removal in SWISs with a negative effect on organics removal. Moreover, intermittent aeration and biochar addition could significantly reduce the N2O emission in SWISs.
