Abstract
Sun protection has become popular within mainstream culture. A common way for people to obtain information on sun protection and monitor their sun exposure is through mobile applications (apps). Our study focuses on the popularity and utility of ultraviolet (UV) index apps. Data on UV app popularity, rating, pricing, and functionality was collected from Google and Apple app markets. The most common functions of UV apps, other than displaying current UV levels, were UV index notifications and providing skin assessments. A minority of apps were published by medical and governmental organizations. Our study demonstrates an area in which dermatologists can advance public understanding of skin protection.
