Abstract
Objective: This study was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of a programme in enhancing the knowledge and awareness of fire safety in children in mainstream schools. Method: 226 pupils completed an evaluation questionnaire on three occasions, in order to ascertain whether the programme had enhanced their knowledge of fire safety and whether any enhancement had been retained over a 3-month period. Results: There was a significant increase in knowledge of fire safety between the pre- and post-programme evaluations, and this increase was maintained at the three-month follow-up evaluation. Conclusion: The fire safety programme was successful in its objective to enhance knowledge and awareness of fire safety as evidenced in the post-programme evaluation. It was also successful in that this knowledge was retained over a three-month period, which has implications for the delivery of fire education programmes in schools and the potential effect on deliberate and accidental fire-setting behaviour.
