Abstract
By way of conclusion, I here summarise the major insights of the articles that make up this collection into the nature of political parties in contemporary central and eastern Europe and relate them to general perspectives on the comparative study of parties in Europe as a whole. Specific characteristics of parties and their path of development in CEE can be identified, but overall they are closely related to parties in the established democracies of western Europe (as well as those at an earlier stage of development) and there is a close fit with the models currently derived from them. Nevertheless, there does seem to be a stubborn residue of regional and/or temporal difference and this, it is argued, may be most usefully studied in the context not just of the changing relations of state and society but also in the different character of both in CEE.
