Abstract

A kinetic study of the over-all thermal decomposition of polyvinylbenzyltriphenylphosphonium chloride has been carried out by thermogravimetry. Two stages have been observed. During the first one, there is a loss of triphenylphosphine and hydrogen chloride. This first stage obeys the isothermal law ln[α/(1 - α)] = kt + C over a large range of mass loss. The activation energy has been calculated as 53.5 kcal mol −1 and the preexponential factor as 4.11 × 10 18 min −1.
