Abstract

Apolant, in 1906 (3) described focal hypertrophic lesions of the mouse mammary gland which he felt resembled adenomas and which were later classified as hyperplastic alveolar lesions. Haaland, in 1911 (36) reported the existence of hyperplastic changes which preceded neoplasia and also showed that increased frequency of hyperplastic mammary gland lesions in mice was related to both increasing age and the subsequent occurrence of cancer. Murray, in 1911 (75) discovered a hereditary factor in the etiology of mouse mammary tumors.
