Abstract

The present stage of development of Soviet Turkic studies is characterized by a broadening and deepening range of vital issues under examination and growth in the general theoretical level of the research. In general works on the history of the republics and oblasts with a Turkic-speaking population, the most important aspect is now ethnogenesis, the ethnic history and the historical-cultural contacts among Turkic peoples. However, it is becoming increasingly clear that only a further elaboration of the interdisciplinary approach to the questions of ethnogenesis, in close connection with the organization of work on the study of the group of historically interacting ethnoses, long in contact with each other on the same common territory, can identify with sufficient objectivity the processes of a people's formation. Such an interdisciplinary approach to the study of ethnogenesis has already been utilized in a number of scholarly meetings devoted to the origin of the Turkic peoples, and in the corresponding monograph publications [1-12].
