Abstract

This article is about the difficult relations between the two main communities in the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Albanians and Macedonians, which led to an armed conflict during spring and summer 2001. After a brief account of the inter‐ethnic problem in the small Republic, the article presents the four dilemmas that the country has faced in the new context of regional conflict: the dilemmas of identity, participation, representation and education. Special emphasis is given to the impact of the Kosovo war on the stability of the country and to the recent crisis.
