Abstract

Students at Duke University are required to complete a “Freshman Seminar” during their first year of study. These seminars are limited to 15 students and are to encourage student involvement and discussion. In the spring of 2000, Dr. Will Willimon, Dean of the chapel at Duke and a member of the Divinity school faculty, and I developed and taught Philosophy 49S for the first time and repeated the course in the spring of 2001. In 2002, I conducted this course on my own as Dean Willimon was on sabbatical leave.
