Abstract

A joint meeting of the Education Group and the Manchester and District Branch of the Institute was held in Manchester on March 24, 1956, as a discussion of " ethical problems confronting a young scientist in the atomic age " and was attended by about 200 people. Sir Eric James, High Master of Manchester Grammar School, was in the Chair. Addresses were given by Mr. G. N. Burkhardt, a research student in mathematical physics in the University of Birmingham, and Dr. P. Lord, of the British Rayon Research Association, representing the younger scientists, and by Professor H. Levy, formerly Head of the Department of Mathematics in the Imperial College of Science and Technology, London, and Professor M. Polanyi, F.R.S., Professor of Social Studies in the University of Manchester and formerly Professor of Physical Chemistry in that University.
