Abstract
A new method of etching diamond is described. (111) faces having point and flat-bottomed trigons on them have been etched by this method, and appreciable etching has been produced within a second. It was observed that the sites of the bottoms of the point-bottomed trigons were preferentially attacked, producing triangular point-bottomed pits. No preferential etching was observed in the case of flat-bottomed trigons. The implications of these results are discussed.
