Abstract
The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of gonadal and nutritional index on the reproductive behavior of Scomberomorus brasiliensis Collette, Russo and Zavala-Camin, 1978 (Perciformes, Scombridae) of the western coast of Maranhao, from June 2001 to July 2002. There was a significant dominance of females when considering the total experimental period. The length/weight relationship did not show a significant difference between the sexes in reference to the alometry coefficient. Analyses of the maturation curve, based on the monthly mean values variation of the gonadosomatic and hepatosomatic relation, and the condition factor, suggest that the reproductive period occurs from March to June. It was observed that the losses of body and liver weight occurred during the gonodal maturation and reproductive processes. The variation analysis of the repletion index mean values showed that the fishes exhibited better feeding conditions before and after the reproductive season

A costa do Maranhão possui uma extensão de 640 Km, sendo caracterizada por uma série de baías e estuários ligados por canais naturais através dos mangues. A área de estudo compreende as zonas costeiras e estuarinas de parte do litoral ocidental maranhense (1°20’S e 2°32’S; 44°18’W e 45°20’W), cobrindo a região que vai da baía de São Marcos até a baía de Turiaçu (Figura 1). A relação entre o peso e o comprimento total foi estabelecida pela equação: Wt = a. Lt b onde: Wt = peso total; Lt = comprimento total; a = fator de condição relacionado com o grau de engorda; b = constante relacionada com o tipo de crescimento dos indivíduos. Para estimar os parâmetros da relação peso/comprimento, foi utilizado o software StatisticaTM for Windows 7.1, por meio de procedimento não-linear com a utilização do algoritmo de Gauss-Newton, que é um processo iterativo que exige valores iniciais (sementes) para os parâmetros a serem estimados (Myers, 1990)
