Abstract
According to the National Survey in Educational Access and Permanence 2021 by INEGI (2022), 36.9% of university students feel stressed and about 26.55% feel desperate by academic activities. On the other hand, 36% male student athletes and 49% female student athletes, see their mental health affected by academic worries, being one of the principal factors that have a negative impact in them (NCAA, 2022). The sample was composed by 107 student athletes in Ciudad Obregon, Sonora, México. The average age reported was 20.82 (SD=1.56). Furthermore, in relation to sex, 53.3% corresponded to males and 46.7% to females. For data recollection, “Systemic Cognitive Inventory for Academic Stress study” (Barraza, 2018) was applied; composed by 21 items with 3 dimensions, with a Likert-type scale of five responses. Moreover, in the academic performance variable, the average grade reported by the student was considered. Data analysis was made by inferential parametric statistics. The results indicate that there is no significant association between academic stress and students’ academic performance. However, when comparing groups, a significant difference was reported between men and women, specifically in symptoms of stress (t=-3.06, p<.05) and academic performance (t=-3.49, p<.05) with women presenting higher academic performance and greater number of stress symptoms. Likewise, when comparing between types of sport (group and individual), a significant difference was noted in coping strategies dimension (t=-2.63, p<.05), in favor of those who practice group sport. In grouping data, 63.5% of the participants reported high or very high levels of academic stress; and in academic performance, 53.3% have a very high level. It is concluded that the student athletes suffer high levels of stress, being the category where a large percentage of the sample is concentrated, however, statistically there is no effect on academic performance. It is recommended to expand the sample and identify aspects that could reduce the levels academic stress in the analyzed population.
