Abstract
Population aging is one of the greatest challenges for contemporary public health. In this context, it is opportune to promote strategies to benefit the nursing care provided to the elderly through community outreach activities due to the importance of a healthy and successful aging process. Thus, this study aims to describe the educational outreach strategies carried out to promote health to the elderly of a senior community center. It reports the experience of a project carried out by students of a nursing course of an Institution of Higher Education of Fortaleza (CE) through the project “Outreach and Research in Health of Family”. The project was held from March to May 2014 and 50 elderly people participated of the activities. It was developed through workshops based on the theoretical reference of Culture Circle of Paulo Freire since it is an active methodology which provides an opportunity for reflection and discussion about the daily routine of elderly people. The results suggest that educational strategies may improve the quality of life of the elderly since it provides them a more positive insight into the aging process. It is believed that it is of fundamental importance to provide the elderly with comprehensive care in order to increase the number of active elders in social and family environment.
