Abstract

The main aim of this research work is to determine one of the major power quality issues i.e. the amount Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) present in a three phase (squirrel cage) induction motor. In this work a simulation and case study for the effective estimation of THD is performed. The case study is performed with a power quality analyzer and the simulation work is carried out using MATLAB/SIMULINK software package. A three phase induction motor is operated without power electronic converters at different load levels and the corresponding THD values are measured and tabulated. Also various mitigation strategies to reduce the amount of THD present in an induction motor are analyzed in this paper.
