Abstract

SYNOPSIS The study presents the measurements of global solar radiation on a horizontal surface and the duration of sunshine for the mid-eastern region of Sudan. The results clearly indicate the abundance of solar energy in the region, showing maximum potential in April and minimum in December—January. The monthly variations of n/N and H/Ho, where n is the measured monthly mean of daily hours of bright sunshine, N is the maximum possible daily hours of sunshine, H is the measured monthly mean of daily global solar radiation, and Ho is the monthly mean of daily extraterrestrial radiation, are also given for the three mid-eastern areas of Sudan, namely Khartoum, Wad Medani and El-Gedaref. The correlationship between the global solar radiation and bright sunshine hours is developed by performing regression analysis using linear, exponential and power models. It is suggested that the linear relationship can be conveniently used without excessively compromising accuracy.
