Abstract

SYNOPSIS The monthly variations of the global solar radiation are studied for several cities in Saudi Arabia and formulated as: H = 2916.6 + 1228.8 m − 97.2 m2 with an average error of 4.6%. The monthly variations of the clearness index are also related and the correlation is obtained as: H/Ho = 0.000321 m + 0.60498 with a standard deviation of 0.0775. These two relations show that the effect of the latitude and altitude can be ignored. Furthermore, the bright sunshine hours are correlated linearly with the global solar radiation and given by: H = 756.2 n − 1075.4 with a reliability of regression, R2 value, of 0.501. Finally, the values of clearness index are presented with the ratio of the bright sunshine hours to the maximum possible daily hours of sunshine.
