Abstract
Abstract The method for calculating the acoustooptic figures of merit of compounds from their chemical compositions and densities is briefly discussed. The specific refractive energy is plotted against the mean atomic weight for oxide components. From this figure 4 binary systems are selected: PbO-Nb2O5, PbO-V2O5, PbO-TiO2 and PbO-CrO3 systems. For estimation of acoustic velocity an empirical curve of velocity-density ratio versus mean atomic weight of compound is plotted. The indexes of refraction, acoustic velocities and figures of merit have been calculated for 7 congruent compounds with density data available in these systems, and most of them are shown to have high values of figure of merit.
