Harper received his B.A. in mathematics from Humboldt State University in 1978 and his M.A. (1980) and his Ph.D. (1984) from the University of Oregon. From 1984 to 1987, Dr. Harper was an Assistant Professor at St. Cloud State University in Central Minnesota. He is now an Assistant Professor at Eastern Washington University in Cheney, Washington, where he teaches graduate as well as undergraduate mathematics. Besides mathematics, his activities include long distance running, biking, hiking, and reading science fiction.This article is dedicated to the faculty of St. Cloud State University, especially to Bob and Gail Earles, Jim Kepner, Ralph Carr, and Sandy Keith.
